Why We Use It
First and foremost, these machines are incredibly simple to use.
The intuitive software streamlines the process, with the press brake having the capacity to cut a variety of aluminium, steels, and yellow metals. Not only does it boost our production capacity, but this investment also increases the speed at which we can complete projects.
‘This kind of automation not only optimises our material flow, it improves our machine use, provides us with a greater level of reliability, and upskills our workforce to operate first-class machinery.’
What Considerations Should Be Taken for Design in Sheet Metal Folding?
Material selection for effective sheet metal folding is based on the end-product’s intended application. So, the main factors of consideration should include:
- Formability
- Malleability
- Cost
- Material weight
What Is a Suitable Material for Bending?
Aluminium and steel are considered for bending and folding applications based on the above four factors. Both metals are readily available with outstanding strength and weight.
Alloys of the 3000 series – aluminium alloy 3003, in particular – have practical qualities that also make them a good fit. You get average strength, making it more malleable to fold, cold workability and a big difference between yield and tensile strength.

A CNC machine processes a piece of material to meet specifications by following a coded programmed instruction. When using CNC machining, it’s so important to have a strong design in place and accurate instructions to the machines that reflect that design. All of this information ensures that your machine is using the right bending angles, bend allowance, bend radius and bend relief, based on the sheet metal thickness being used. Using CAD design processes also allows us to save and generate designs again and again for batch production if required, and allows us to store all of the designs we create and implement for repeated use.
Once the sheet metal has been pressed, creating the shapes and angles that are required, most projects will move into welding, to secure the parts and ensure that the design keeps its shape without bending, warping or damage.
What is Metal Folding, and How do Press Brakes Work?
Metal folding can be used to create a huge range of products. Metal folding is used to refer to a range of bending applications, which means that it can be used to create enclosures, boxes and more.
The process of metal folding and bending is usually done using a press brake machine, which exerts high tensile strengths and shear forces to bend sheet metal into the exact shape required, as established by the original project drawings. The latest press brake machinery is still the most common method of accurate metal folding as they can often handle a broader range of material thicknesses. The majority of press brake machines contain a hydraulic ram with an upper punch that presses metal into a lower die to create the curves, shapes, and angles set out in the original CAD design. All of our press brakes are computer-controlled, with the help of CNC technology.
FAQs: Our Sheet Metal Folding Services Explained
We understand that you may have questions about sheet metal folding and its applications. Whether you’re new to press brakes or seeking specific information, we’re here to help.
For the larger picture, be sure to check out our Metal Manufacturing Processes Guide, which covers other fabrication techniques, such as, welding and metal cutting.
What Is a Press Brake?
A press brake is a machine that is used to bend sheet metal. It consists of a sturdy frame, complete with a hydraulic or mechanical ram and a die set.
The sheet metal is placed between the ram and the die, and when pressure is applied, the metal is bent or formed to the desired shape.
Metal Folding vs Metal Bending: What’s the Difference?
Due to its machine-controlled folding angle, metal folding provides high precision and accuracy. It generally performs better with thicker materials than bending. Compared to bending, metal folding produces high-quality products that are free of surface scratches.
What Materials Can Be Folded?
A wide range of materials are able to be folded (such as plastics, mesh, and wood), but here at LSW, we specialise exclusively in folding metals. We do this by using a press brake machine, which exerts high tensile strengths and shear forces to bend sheet metal into the exact shape you require, as established by the project drawings at the initial 2D or 3D CAD design stage.
What Is the Difference between a Press Brake and Folding Machine?
The key difference between a folding machine and a press brake is how they handle a workpiece. On a press brake, the flange is gauged and the rest of the part is rotated up.
On a folding machine, it’s the opposite – the part is gauged and supported on the sheet support system and the flange is turned up. Typically, press brakes are able to work on thicker, heavier metal, whereas folding machines are more suited to more delicate work.
What Are the Different Folding Techniques Used in Sheet Metal Folding?
Metal folding techniques are varied, with the most common types being:
- Bottoming
- Air Bending
- Coining
- Wiping
- Folding
- Rolling
- Joggling
- Hydraulic CNC Press Brakes
